Derek du Bruyn

Derek-Du-Bruyn

Derek was appointed as a historian at the National Museum in Bloemfontein in 2007, where he still works. He started his career as an archivist at the Free State Provincial Archives in Bloemfontein in 1993.

He obtained the degree B.A. in 1990, B.A. (Hons.) in 1991 and the degree M.A. (History) with distinction in 1995 from the University of the Free State. He was awarded his PhD in 2018 with thesis title: – Gardens, gardening culture and the development of a semi-vernacular garden style in Batho, Mangaung, 1918-1939 – a historical perspective.

Derek specialises in community history, cultural history and oral history He is currently involved in the Batho Community History project (including the Batho Liberation Heritage project and the Digaretene project) and the Batho Vegetable Gardens project.
