August 2020 marked an end of an era since Volksblad ended their print format. The office building that housed the Volksblad for more than a 100 years was recently sold and the Media24 team is in the process of moving to new premises.
Due to this reason and a sincere wish to preserve the history of an iconic Free State and Bloemfontein institution, all valuable sports photography and memorabilia celebrating the sporting history of the Free State and South Africa will now be preserved by the National Museum, Bloemfontein.
The Museum already boasts an exhibition on local sport and sport icons displaying items that belonged to Zola Budd, Andrѐ Venter, Helgard Müller, Amanda Coetzer and Hansie Cronje. We are also proud to have Dr Hendrik Snyders, historian and Head of the History Department, whose research focuses on South African sporting history as member of our team.
Some highlights of the Volksblad donation includes framed photographs depicting momentous achievements by the Cheetahs rugby team; The Gestetner Diamond Eagles; the Protea cricket team and the Springbok rugby team. Other items received are typographical equipment that was used in the printing of Die Volksblad during the 1980s and several framed memorable Volksblad front pages and a scrap book on Zola Budd.
