The Entomology Department launched the International Survey of Afrotropical Diptera project starting in 2017. Forming part of this were three field trips to Malawi (November 2016); Mauritius (December 2016) and Mpumalanga (January 2017). Members were: Dr Ashley Kirk-Spriggs and Burgert Muller of the National Museum, Dr Kurt Jordaens of the Royal Museum for Central Africa, Belgium (Malawi and Mpumalanga); Drs Daniel Whitmore and Zoe Adams of the Natural History Museum, London (Mpumalanga) as well as Dr Stephen Marshall of the University of Guelph, Canada and Dr Gunnar Kvifte of the Purdue University, USA (Mauritius).
