A 146 000 year old, almost complete skull was found in the Songhua River in China. This represents a new sister lineage for Homo sapiens.Scientists describe the skull in a new paper published in the journal, The Innovation. The team was led by Prof Qiang Ji from the Hebei GEO University. The study found that the Harbin cranium shows a distinctive combination of apomorphic and plesiomorphic features supporting the diagnosis as a new species of Homo.
The name ‘Dragon Man’ is derived from the geographic name Long Jiang which literally means “dragon river.”
