During October, Dr Lizel Hugo-Coetzee (Acarology), Jan Andries Neethling (Arachnology), Dr Michael Bates, Buyi Makhubo and Agnes Phindane (all Herpetology), and Elize Butler and Sina Chaka (both Palaeontology) attended the launch of the Natural Science Collections Facility at the Alpine Heath resort in the Drakensberg. Jan gave a presentation about the natural history collections of the National Museum. About 150 delegates from museums all over South Africa attended the event. Natural science collections are libraries of South Africa’s biodiversity and have been built up for over hundreds of years. The Natural Science Collections Facility will co-ordinate and oversee more than 30 million preserved plant, animal and fossil specimens in more than 40 museums, and other institutions in South Africa.
