Dr Michael F. Bates of the Herpetology Department has been appointed as a member of the Skink Specialist Group, part of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Species Survival Commission.

The Skink Specialist Group (SSG) is ‘a global network of skink biologists and conservation managers that aims to complete Red List assessments for all skink species worldwide to identify species with high extinction risk and determine the factors underlying high extinction risk’. It is responsible for developing strategies to manage extinction risk and improve the status of threatened skink species, and to co-ordinate conservation management for threatened species. Michael will be particularly involved in the evaluation of southern African species.
