Two Museum staff members are currently participating in the Birdlasser South African #Lockdown Challenge. The competition which started on 27 Mar 2020 (00:00) is currently underway and will end on 16 Apr 2020 (23:59).
The competition aims to see how many birds the competitors can record in their gardens during the Covid-19 Lockdown period.
Museum ornithologist, Dawie de Swardt, has recorded 30 spp and Jaco Smith (Florisbad) has recorded around 37 spp.
Have you ever wondered how long the common birds in our garden live?
Valuable information on the survival rate of birds can be obtained from bird ringing. During the #Lockdown challenge, Dawie de Swardt recaptured 3 birds which he had ringed before. One of the recaptures was first ringed by him as a juvenile dove on 19 December 2010. That is a decade later!
