Every year, on the 24th September, South Africans celebrate Heritage Day. This special day focuses on South Africa’s diverse cultural and natural heritage. For 2017 the National Museum hosted a special heritage event at Boikhuco Old Age Centre in Bochabela. Co-hosted by Derek du Bruyn, Khotso Pudumo and Amy Goitsemodimo, the event focused on an important aspect of African people’s intangible heritage, namely storytelling.
In 1958 the Bloemfontein Group of artists (hereafter BG) was formally established under the leadership of Prof. Frik Scott, with the support of his wife Dora. The founding members of the group were Frans Claerhout (1919–2006), Reneé le Roux (b. 1927), Alexander Podlashuc (1930–2009), Eben van der Merwe (b. 1932) and Marianne Podlashuc (1932–2004).
The so-called miser’s purse is known by many names: miser bags, ring or string purse, long purse and stocking purse to name but a few. This purse dates back to the late 18th century and was popular until the early 1900s.
Sport het sedert die vroegste dae van Bloemfontein se ontstaan in 1846 ’n belangrike rol in die lewe van die inwoners gespeel. Die koms van kaptein (later majoor) H.D. Warden, die stigter van Bloemfontein, en sy Britse soldate was ook die begin van sportbedrywighede in die latere Vrystaatse hoofstad. Krieket, perdewedrenne, rugby en sokker is sportsoorte wat deur die Engelssprekendes na Bloemfontein gebring is.
The settlement of Riemvasmaak is located in a spectacular corner of the arid Northern Cape Province, close to the Namibian border and Augrabies Falls. This harsh region was inhabited by San hunter-gatherers for millennia, and from about 2000 years ago until historical times also by Khoekhoen (Khoikhoi) herders of fat-tailed sheep and cattle.
